Two men. They flirt. They dance. They fall in love.
House. Dog. Coffee machine. Joint bank accounts.
Work. Routine. Drift. Crisis.
Intimate, poetic and de-centering, Unconditional weaves a compelling tapestry of a queer relationship between a man who identifies as gay and a person whose identity evolves during their marriage… starting as “he”, but now transitioning to “she”, which destablises their union, their belief systems, and their politics.
Each playwright writes for one character in subjective monologue, duelling monologue and dialogue. Told with humour, insight and absolute honesty, Unconditional re-examines and re-defines the nature of love and what we tell ourselves we would accept.
Is love really unconditional? Or does it have conditions like everything else?
A Playlab Theatre Production. Playlab Theatre and this project are supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This project has also been supported by the Creative Sparks Fund which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council to support local arts and culture in Brisbane. Unconditional is a Playlab Theatre commission developed through the organisation’s Playwright-in-Residence program.

Seán debuts professionally in 'Unconditional'. A multifaceted artist, she's collaborated on Counterpilot's projects and served Brisbane's major arts organizations, ranging from Brisbane Festival to emerging theatre companies.
Cameron Hurry
Cameron Hurry, a neuroqueer actor and writer, has a rich theatrical background including performances in 'Grand Horizons' and 'The Lonesome West,' and film appearances in 'Boy Swallows Universe' and 'Young Rock.'
Brian Lucas
Brian Lucas learnt the power of resilience, connection and unity from an early age and sees this as the fabric of Brisbane’s creative sector.
Ian Lawson
Ian Lawson, an award-winning Director and Dramaturg, and Artist Director/CEO of Playlab Theatre, has concentrated on new Australian work for over 20 years.
Bill Haycock
Bill has designed over 170 plays, ballets, operas, and more. Notably, he designed judicial robes for Australia's High and Federal Courts. From 2005-2011, he headed design at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
David Walters
David is a distinguished Lighting Designer with 40 years of experience in Australia and Iceland. Celebrated for lighting his 100th show for Queensland Theatre, his work has toured widely, and he's been awarded the ABF Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
Brady Watkins
As a versatile sound professional, Brady has worked as a Composer/Sound Designer, Sound Consultant, Sound Operator, and Associate Sound Designer for prestigious theatre companies.
