Sip and Science
Brisbane Festival and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience Present
Conversations that spotlight the intersection of art and science in our world.
Grab your drink on entry and enjoy a guided conversation between IMB researchers and Festival artists.
Last year’s popular Sip and Science returns to Australian Retirement Trust Festival Garden, South Bank. The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience presents a series of panel conversations that spotlight the intersection of art and science in our world.
Fear and Fascination - Sun 3 Sep
Featuring Artistic Director and Co-Founder of ERTH, Scott Wright, and researchers Dr Sam Robinson and Dr Natalie Saez from the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), this panel conversation will walk the thinly-veiled line between friend and foe.
From great whites to nasty bites - Dr Sam Robinson and Dr Natalie Saez have both had their fair share of close calls! As researchers whose work is centred around the lifesaving venom found within stinging insects, tarantulas and funnel-web spiders, the fear and the fascination are equal drivers.Nature vs. Nurture - Sun 10 Sep
Featuring co-creators of Brisbane Festival's new hit musical BANANALAND, and real-life partners Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall, and Associate Professor Loic Yengo from the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), this panel conversation will be an insightful look inside what makes us who we are.
Award-winning scientist and mathematician Associate Professor Loic Yengo and his team develop and apply new methods to discover patterns in our DNA sequences that may contribute to disease susceptibility and resilience.
Our three panellists will explore a genetic predisposition to talent, resilience and the power of our environment on our development.
Language of the Land - Sun 17 Sep
Featuring Artistic Director of Australian Dance Theatre and creator of Tracker, Daniel Riley and IMB researcher, Dr Zeinab Khalil, this conversation will dive deep on the secrets that lay within the natural world around us, and how we can uncover them.
Dr Zeinab Khalil specialises in discovering new medicines from nature, particularly from microbes living in soil and from marine life. She is Program Manager of Soils for Science, an Australian-first citizen science program dedicated to finding new antibiotics needed in the fight against drug-resistant infections.
